If you have an innovative business idea and want to build it in the UK, the Innovator Founder visa could be the right route for you. It’s designed for entrepreneurs who can demonstrate that their business is innovative, viable and scalable, and offers an expedited route to settlement after just three years.
Key requirements
- Have a business proposal endorsed by an approved endorsing body
- Show that your business or idea is new, original, and different from anything else on the market
- Prove the business has potential for growth and scalability
- Meet the English language requirement at CEFR B2 level or above (usually proven through a degree taught in English, or holding valid nationality from an approved list of English-speaking countries, or passing an approved test)
- Be able to support yourself financially during your stay.
You cannot join an existing trading business under this route. Your business must be new.
What does it allow?
The Innovator Founder visa gives you the freedom to:
- Set up and run your endorsed business in the UK
- Work for your own business and take on certain other work outside your business if you choose
- Bring eligible dependants (partner and children) to the UK
- Travel abroad and return to the UK.
The visa is granted for three years. You can extend it for another three years as many times as needed. After three years, you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain (settlement).
You must meet with your endorsing body after 12 and 24 months to show business progress. If your endorsement is withdrawn, your visa may be curtailed. You will need to obtain a fresh endorsement or consider switching into another immigration route.
How do you apply?
You apply online and provide your biometric information. Most applicants can verify their identity digitally using the UK Immigration ID Check app; others will attend an in-person biometric appointment UKVI approved Visa Application Centre outside the UK or attend a UKVCAS appointment from within the UK.
You’ll need relevant supporting documents, such as:
- An endorsement letter from an approved endorsing body
- Evidence of your business plan and financial resources
- Proof of English language ability.
Fees and health surcharge
Home Office fees vary by category.
You’ll also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, calculated based on how long your visa is granted.
