Artificial Intelligence in Schools and Ofsted's AI Guidance
The possibilities for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools is endless. From producing lesson plans and class timetables, to suggesting resources and activities that align with specific learning objectives; AI can be an invaluable tool. However, schools are advised to proceed with caution because, although AI enabled tools are more widely available, this new technology presents both opportunity and risk.
In April 2024, Ofsted published its approach to AI: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ofsteds-approach-to-ai/ofsteds-approach-to-artificial-intelligence-ai
Below is a reminder of what Ofsted expects from schools who are already using AI in their day to day processes:
- Be transparent about your use of AI, and make sure you understand the suggestions it makes
- Ensure that you and your staff have clear roles and responsibilities in relation to the monitoring, evaluation, maintenance and use of AI
- Safety, security and robustness - Assure yourselves that your AI solutions are secure and safe for users as well as protecting users’ data
- Ensure you can identify and rectify bias or error
- Only use AI solutions that are ethically appropriate – in particular, Ofsted expects schools to consider bias relating to small groups and protected characteristics before using AI, monitor bias closely and correct problems where appropriate
- Make sure that school staff are empowered to contest, correct and overrule AI suggestions. Decisions should be made by the user of AI, not the technology
- Allow and respond appropriately to concerns and complaints where AI may have caused an error resulting in adverse consequences or unfair treatment.
Ofsted is also seeking to better understand the use of AI by schools so that it can consider schools' decision making more effectively when it comes to its own inspection and regulatory activity. To that end, Ofsted will be communicating with schools in order to learn from your experience of using AI in your setting.
