British Citizenship

Immigration legal advice for individuals

British citizenship provides certainty and full rights – freedom to live, work and travel without restrictions. It’s a practical choice for individuals seeking long-term security and stability in the UK.

Becoming a British citizen is a significant milestone. It gives you the right to live, work and travel freely in the UK, whilst providing access to the  benefits of holding a British passport.

Types of British citizenship

There are two main types of British citizenship: citizenship ‘by descent’ and citizenship ‘otherwise than by descent’.

Citizenship otherwise than by descent is usually acquired through birth, adoption, naturalisation or registration in the UK or a qualifying territory. It allows you to pass citizenship to children born overseas.

Citizenship by descent, on the other hand, is typically passed down only one generation to children born outside the UK.

Understanding Citizenship vs Nationality

British citizenship is one form of nationality and gives you the right to apply for a British passport and live without immigration restrictions. However, there are other types of British nationality, such as British Overseas Territories Citizen or British National (Overseas). Not all types of British nationality give holders an unrestricted right to live and work in the UK.

As different forms of British nationality confer differing rights, we help explain these important distinctions and  guide you through the correct application process.

Who can apply?

There are several routes to British citizenship, including:

  • Naturalisation: For adults who are not born British and who have settled in the UK
  • Registration: For children and adults or those with specific statutory entitlements
  • Automatic acquisition: For those born with British citizenship.

  • Automatic right to live and work in the UK
